The constitution of Texas is the second oldest state constitution. It was adopted in 1876, and still is effective. The ruling party in Texas is The Republican Party. Twenty-one Republican and eleven Democrats represent Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives. And at present, Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn (both Republicans) represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. Rick Perry, another republican has been serving Texas as its Governor since December 2000. He is the 47 th Governor of Texas.

Governor Perry has concentrated his government on providing best education facilities, creating better job opportunities, better health, maintain low taxes for the citizens of Texas . He increased healthcare and educational expenditures regardless of tough economic times. His government has invested in jobs with Texas Enterprise Fund. His educational reforms include constructing a college-prep curriculum the typical assignment for Texas high schools which will start with 2008 class. It will raise the performance of students.

The administrative division includes the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, The State Board of Education, Land Commissioner, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Agriculture Commissioner and the Secretary of the state. The maximum powers lies in the hands of the Governor in Texas . He is accountable for appointing members of different executive boards and he commands the Texas militia.

The Texas Legislature also has two chambers; The House of Representatives (150 members) and the Senate (31 members). At present, the speaker of the House of Representatives is Tom Craddick and the State Senate is lead by David Dewhurst. Only the Governor has the power to call a special session or many sessions. Otherwise once every two years, the legislature assembles in a regular sessions.
